_SIGNAL SERIES

Picture
The Signal Series brings back the substantive political pamphlet, with single essays on a range of topics, but all of them offering sharp, original thinking, in accessible language. We're looking for original essays on politics and culture, from a broadly defined radical perspective, awareness of multiple oppressions and constituencies, and providing useful insights for activist work or the building of radical culture.  Writing must be accessible, non-academic and free of left jargon. Creative, literary prose, and personal content are welcome as ways of illuminating the political. Illustrations are welcome.  Essays should be between 2,000 and 30,000 words, ideally between  6,000 and 20,000.

We seek unpublished work, or work that has gone out of print, or is difficult to access.  We will consider translations.  If previously published, the author must have rights to the work.  If a translation, written consent from the author.

Begin with a query letter explaining why you consider the essay significant and useful, its main points, and a 1-2 page sample.

PALABRERA POETS

Picture
Emerging poets who have not yet published a full length book, and whose work reflects engagement with social justice issues, are invited to submit manuscripts of poetry and prose poetry of between 20 and 60 pages in length.

Palabrera is especially interested in publishing writing by people of color, including mixed heritage people, queer writers, sick and disabled writers and other communities whose access to publishing has been limited by oppression.

We’re particularly drawn to work that is narrative, engaging, personal and accessible, but will consider all poetic genres of socially committed writing.   Manuscripts integrating black and white artwork and writing are welcome.

Please send a query letter describing your project, a short bio, and a sample of no more than ten pages.

RADICAL LIVES

Picture
For this series, we’re looking for well researched and written, short biographies of little known radical activists,  unknown aspects of the lives of better known figures, or new interpretations of their significance.

We will also consider reprints of out of print short biographical essays.  Photographs and other illustrations are a plus.  Sources must be included in end notes or footnotes.

We’re open to a variety of writing styles, as long as the language is accessible and any special terms or concepts are defined, either in the text or in a glossary.

Queries should include your qualifications to write the biography, and a brief summary of the significance of the subject, and/or your approach.  An outline and/or 5-6 page sample is welcome, but we’ll  consider queries at the idea stage.
