
This forthcoming mystery novel, by Aurora Levins Morales, is set in Puerto Rico in 1897, a generation after the abolition of slavery, and less than a year before the U.S. invasion. Norma Morales' family straddles lines of class and race, politics and occupation. With roots among both the enslaved and the enslavers, and passionate convictions on behalf of women and the poor, Norma, part time laundress and journalist, is drawn into a tangled web of old tragedies and contemporary struggles when her best friend, La Negra Malú, is arrested for the murder of her upper class white lover's sister.
